Hello! Thanks for checking out my blog today!
I tried my hand at making a watercolor background for a simple stamping card and I think it turned out pretty great for a first try. Watercoloring is something I definitely need to practice as it's not super intuitive to me. But this background is nothing fancy and super easy to create and it adds some great interest to your card. First, I made a simple card, using just stamps, ink, and paper. Then, I stepped it up a little bit, adding some Designer Series Paper and some gold metallic trim.
Here's the simple stamping card:
And here's the stepped up card:
You can watch the YouTube video demonstrating the technique and making the cards here:
For these projects, start by making the watercolor backgrounds. They can dry while you work on some other parts of the projects. Cut one sheet of Fluid 100 watercolor paper in half - each sheet is 5" x 7" so you'll have two, 3 1/2" x 5" pieces of paper. You can use any watercolor paper that you have - you'll find a link to the Stampin' Up(R) Fluid 100 watercolor paper below. Using Pear Pizzazz and Pretty Peacock ink, add ink to the paper in a random way with water painters. Be sure to use plenty of water! Stampin' Up's new water painter pens are awesome! They come in a pack of three and the pens have different sized tips. I used my Heat Tool to dry the water color before adding the second color.
While the water colored backgrounds finish drying, fold a half sheet (5 1/2" x 8 1/2") piece of Just Jade cardstock in half. Stamp a leaf image from the Forever Fern stamp set onto the left side of the card base (on the fold side) using Just Jade ink. You could also stamp the inside of your card and adhere it to give your background a little more time to dry. The inside of the card is a piece of Whisper White cardstock that is 5 1/4" by 4". Stamp a leaf image on the lower right corner in Pear Pizzazz ink. Then stamp the "bean" image (I don't know what else to call them - they look like beans to me) in Just Jade ink on top of it. Adhere the white stamped piece into the inside of the card base.
On your first watercolored background, stamp a leaf image a couple of times positioned with the leaves going toward the top of the layer in Pear Pizzazz ink, with the bottom of the images just below center (you'll cover this with the sentiment), and one time with the leaves going toward the bottom of the layer. Stamp the "bean" image in Pretty Peacock ink in the same manner.
Using a piece of Pear Pizzazz cardstock that is 1" x 3 1/2", stamp the sentiment in Versamark Ink and emboss with white embossing powder. (For a truly "simple stamping" card, you could stamp the sentiment using a darker ink, like Pretty Peacock, or stamp it on a Whisper White strip of the same size). Stamp leaf images around the outside of the sentiment to add some more interest on the sentiment layer.
Adhere the watercolored/stamped layer to a Shaded Spruce layer (3 5/8" x 5 1/8"). Add the sentiment to the watercolored layer using dimensionals. Adhere to the card base a little to the right of center so that the stamped left edge of the cardbase is shown.
For the stepped up version, instead of stamping the edge of the cardbase, adhere a strip of the Forever Greenery Designer Series Paper that is 1" x 5 1/2". Stamp the watercolored layer, as before and adhere the layer to the Shaded Spruce layer. Before adhering the sentiment, adhere some gold trim from the Forever Greenery Trim Combo Pack using Stampin' Seal or Stampin' Seal plus, where you'll place the sentiment. Adhere the sentiment over the gold trim with dimensionals. Stamp a couple of leaf images in Pear Pizzazz ink and a couple of "bean" images in Pretty Peacock ink on a scrap of Whisper White cardstock. Cut the images out using the coordinating dies from the Forever Flourishing dies. Cut some sprigs from Shaded Spruce cardstock. Adhere the die cut images under the sentiment and gold trim. You could also add some sequins or gems to this version.
