Simple Stamping and How to Use Left Over Dies Plus a Fun Technique

Hi there! Thanks for stopping by my blog. Today's post and video show how to make some super simple note cards and what to do with those left over die cut pieces that you don't end up using. I also show a really fun and simple technique for those middle pieces from your dies and also a pretty sympathy card.

Let's get started. The video showing how to make today's cards is below.

The first two cards are note cards using the Hoot Hoot Hooray stamp set in the Experience Creativity brochure, which provides projects kits and ideas for the beginner stamper or the stamper who wants to send handmade cards but doesn't have a lot of time. The Experience Creativity brochure is in effect for the same amount of time as the Annual Catalog, which means you can get the items in the brochure from June 4, 2019 through June 2, 2020.

These first two cards use the Hoot Hoot Hooray stamp set and Note Cards & Envelopes listed on page 12 and 13 of the Experience Creativity brochure (the Note Cards & Envelopes can also be found on page 168 of the Annual Catalog). This is such a darling set with some super cute images. I just basically copied the samples found in the Experience Creativity brochure, with a couple of tweaks, to show how easy it is to make cards with this set.

The note cards come already scored, so you only have to fold them. For the owl card, stamp the image a couple of times on the card without the sentiment - I covered the sentiment with a post it note before inking it up. Be sure to remove the post it note before you stamp the image, though! Then stamp the image a third time, including the sentiment.

Color the stamped image with Crumb Cake light and dark blends. You can buy both with one product code, or you can order each one separately. You could also use colored pencils or Stampin Write markers to color the images. If you order the whole suite from the Experience Creativity brochure, you can use one product code and you'll get the stamp set, the note cards & envelopes, a Basic Gray ink pad, a clear block, and watercolor pencils - all for $60.00. What a great price to make 20 cards. And you can use the ink, block, pencils and stamp set over and over. Just buy a new pack of note cards & envelopes (for $7) and you are good to go.

For the flower card, stamp the flower image three times on the note card without the sentiment and one time on a scrap with the sentiment. Color the images with the Stampin Blends (or watercolor pencils or markers). Punch out the image with sentiment using the 2 1/4" punch. Adhere to card using dimensionals.

On the second card, I wanted to use some die cut flowers from the Wild Rose dies that I had left over from a card that I made last week. I had an idea of what I wanted to try to do with the dies but hadn't put anything together. I filmed my process for figuring out how to design a card as I made it.

Gather your supplies:

• To A Wild Rose stamp set
• Wild Rose dies (buy the bundle using product code 151073 and save 10% - link below)
• Mosaic Mood DSP (1 1/2 x 5 1/4")
• Blushing Bride card base (5 1/2 x 8 1/2", folded in half)
• Soft Suede cardstock (5 1/4 x 4")
• Very Vanilla cardstock scrap for sentiment (1" strip) and circle
• Terracotta Tile and Cajun Craze cardstock dies
• Terracotta Tile cardstock scrap for mat behind circle
• 2" circle punch
• Starburst punch
• Banner Triple punch
• Mossy Meadow velum for leaf die cut and leaf punch
• Leaf punch
• Soft Suede ink
• Calypso Coral ink

Adhere DSP to Soft Suede layer toward left side, touching top and bottom edge of card.

When I cut the flower outline dies for another project, I attached a piece of Press N' Seal to the entire flower before removing the inside pieces. Then I pealed the outline part off of the Press N' Seal so that only the inside parts remain. Adhere flower outline dies in Cajun Craze and Terracotta Tile to right side of Soft Suede layer. Adhere flower outline die to Very Vanilla scrap. Place dots of liquid glue on each piece of the inside pieces, then fit the pieces inside the flower outline. I placed Terracotta Tile inside pieces inside of the Cajun Craze outline. 

Punch out the pieced together flower using the 2" circle punch.

Punch a starburst from the Calypso Coral cardstock using the Starburst punch. Adhere the circle to the starburst. Adhere the two layers to the card project using dimensionals.

Stamp "Blessed" using Calypso Coral ink, stamping off a layer of ink on scrap paper before stamping on Very Vanilla strip. Stamp "To be your friend" on top of "Blessed" in Soft Suede ink. 

Banner cut each end of the sentiment using the Banner Triple punch or paper snips.

Adhere vellum leaves behind circle layer.

I think the card turned out really cute! That was a fun technique for using up the dies I had left over from the other project. I definitely want to try that technique again!

The last card is a sympathy card I made for a friend who just lost her husband.

Stamp tree trunk from Memorable Mosaic stamp set on Mosaic Mood DSP layer in Early Espresso ink. Stamp leaves in Mossy Meadow ink on DSP layer above trunk. Move stamp slightly and stamp again without re-inking. Move stamp again and stamp a third time without re-inking. This fills in the leaves for the tree.

Stamp "heartfelt" in Early Espresso ink on scrap of Very Vanilla cardstock. Punch out using Timeless Label punch. Die cut word "sympathy" from Blackberry Bliss cardstock and adhere to punched out sentiment. Die cut butterfly from Calypso Coral scrap and adhere to punched sentiment.

Punch Timeless Label from another piece of Mosaic Mood DSP. Cut in half and adhere behind sentiment as mat.

Adhere entire sentiment piece to card front using dimensionals. Adhere DSP layer to card front using multipurpose liquid glue.

Tie ribbon with 5/8" organdy striped ribbon and adhere to card just below sentiment. Adhere three pearls to sentiment.

Stamp sentiment on inside of card.

And there you have it - three pretty easy cards - all made without a specific plan going in so you could see my process. And we got them all finished in about an hour - not too bad for no plan (ha!).

Three-Step Stamping with To a Wild Rose and Using Dies as Stencils

Today I'm showing you two really beautiful cards using the To a Wild Rose stamp set and coordinating Wild Rose dies. I just love this stamp set - the images are amazing and it is a super versatile stamp set. You can buy the stamp set and dies together, using item code 151073, and save 10%.

For the first card, I was really feeling the fall colors. I guess I'm ready to exit summer and get right into fall. School is starting around here and high school football is just a couple of weeks away so it seems like time to break out the fall colors. Our high school colors are orange and black and I'm ready to see lots of orange!

I'd been wanting to play with this stamp set and I had a color combo in mind that I wanted to try so that's what inspired this card. Orange roses are said to be appropriate for any expression of enthusiasm, including love, friendship, congratulations, or thanks. So the color scheme seems right for what I was feeling for this card.

Gather your supplies:

• To a Wild Rose bundle - To a Wild Rose stamp set and Wild Rose dies;
• Birch background stamp;
• Seasonal Layers dies for "branch";
• Terracotta Tile cardstock for card base - 8 1/2 x 5 1/2", folded in half;
• Cajun Craze cardstock for layer - 5 1/4 x 4" ;
• Whisper White cardstock layer - 5 1/8 x 3 7/8" for top layer on card and 5 1/4 x 4" for inside card;
• Scrap Whisper White, Early Espresso and Old Olive cardstock;
• Scrap Old Olive velum (from Perennial Essence vellum cardstock pack;
• Grapefruit Grove, Terracotta Tile, Cajun Craze, Early Espresso, and Versamark ink
• White embossing powder

Ink up the Birch background stamp with Terracotta Tile ink and place the 5 1/8 x 3 7/8" piece of Whisper White cardstock on top. Place a piece of scrap paper on top to rub on paper to make sure the image is even, being careful not to move the cardstock piece.

To stamp the roses, I used the Stamparatus to make sure everything lined up correctly, especially since I was stamping two roses. These stamps are easy to line up using clear blocks, as well, because they are photopolymer stamps. Using the Stamparatus, I placed my scrap of Whisper White cardstock on the Stamparatus and held it down using one of the strong magnets that come with the Stamparatus.

The rose is made using three-step stamping, which means there are three stamps that are stamped sequentially, one on top of the other, to give the image shading and depth. Place the first stamp (the most "solid-looking" image) face down on the paper where you want the image to be stamped. Since you're going to die cut the roses out of the paper, it doesn't matter where they are placed, as long as there is room to place the die to cut out the image.

The Stamparatus is great to use on projects where you are making a number of the same card and you want the images or sentiments to be in the same place on every card. It makes the stamping process so much faster, and you can see the proof of that in the video when I stamp the second flower after setting up the first one.

Once the first stamp is placed on the paper where you want the image to be, close the Stamparatus plate onto the stamp to pick it up. The photopolymer stamp will stick to the plate and stay on it when you open it back up while your paper stays in place. Ink up the stamp using Grapefruit Grove ink. Close the plate again so that the image stamps onto your paper. You'll want to press down on the Stamparatus plate to make sure you get an even image. If you don't get a good image, the great thing about the Stamparatus is that it allows you to just ink the stamp up again and close the plate back onto your paper to get a better image because it will be exactly lined up to the first image you stamped.

Place the second stamp in the three-step process (the one with shading on it, but not as solid of an image as the first stamp) face down on the image you just stamped so that the images line up. It's pretty easy to tell where they line up with these stamps, there's a "petal" that sticks up and curves to the right a bit on all three images so you can easily line them up. Once the second stamp is lined up on the image where you want to stamp it, close the other Stamparatus plate (the one you didn't use for the first image) onto it to pick up the stamp. Ink up the stamp with Terracotta Tile ink and stamp it on top of the first image, pressing down like you did the first time.

Place the third stamp in the three-step process (the outline of the flower) on top of the image, lining up the petals like before. Leaving the stamps that are already on your Stamparatus plates in place, take one of the plates off and turn it around to use the other side of the plate to pick up the third stamp. Ink up the stamp using Cajun Craze ink and stamp it on your image.

Your first flower is done! Isn't it pretty?!?  If you don't have a Stamparatus, never fear! These stamps are so easy to line up when mounted on clear blocks, too!

Repeat the process to stamp the second flower with your stamps already mounted on your Stamparatus. See how much faster that was!

Die cut the flowers you just stamped using the matching die from the Wild Rose dies. Die cut two leaves from the Old Olive vellum cardstock and two of the outlined leaves from Old Olive cardstock. Die cut a branch from Early Espresso cardstock using the Seasonal Layers dies.

Adhere the Whisper White layer (stamped with the Birch background stamp) to the Cajun Craze layer. Place the branch and flowers on the card to see where to place the "Blessed" sentiment. Stamp the "Blessed" sentiment toward the lower right portion of the card in Early Espresso ink, leaving enough room under that for the "to be your friend" sentiment.

Rub your embossing buddy along a 1/2" strip of Old Olive cardstock. Stamp "to be your friend" on the strip using Versamark ink. Emboss using white embossing powder. Cut a banner end on the left end of the sentiment strip using the Banner Triple punch or just cut with scissors.

Adhere the branch and flowers to the card front, popping up one of the flowers using Stampin Dimensionals. Adhere the "to be your friend" sentiment under the "Blessed" sentiment using dimensionals. Adhere the entire layer on the card base using dimensionals.

Stamp the outline stamp on the corner of the 5 1/4 x 4" layer using Terracotta Tile ink and adhere to the inside of the card.

So beautiful! I love those colors on the roses - don't you?

I wanted to make the second card a little more summer-y so I stuck with the Grapefruit Grove, which isn't quite as "heavy" a color as Cajun Craze and Terracotta Tile, and I added Pool Party, Coastal Cabana, and Bermuda Bay. I thought this was a super fun and happy color combination.

I had die cut several of the flower outlines using the die in the Wild Rose die set and wanted to do something with them so I decided to try a technique to make a background for the second stamp. I think it turned out super fun!

Gather your supplies:

• To a Wild Rose bundle (To a Wild Rose stamp set and Wild Rose dies);
• Scripts 3D embossing folder;
• Grapefruit Grove card base, cut 4 1/4 x 11", scored at 5 1/2" ;
• Coastal Cabana cardstock layer, 5 1/2 x 3 1/2" ;
• Very Vanilla cardstock layer, 5 1/4 x 3 1/4" ; and 5 1/4 x 4" for inside card;
• scrap of Very Vanilla cardstock for sentiment;
• Grapefruit Grove 1/8" grosgrain ribbon;
• Woven Threads sequin assortment

Emboss one half of the Grapefruit Grove card base using the Scripty 3D embossing folder. Rather than embossing the card base itself, you could emboss a layer of Grapefruit Grove cardstock, cut to 5 3/8 x 4 1/8" and adhere it to the card base. That would just give a little bit more interest and dimension to the card.

Cut about 6 or 7 of the outline flowers from the Wild Rose dies using scrap paper - cardstock probably works best because it's a bit thicker and sturdier than just scrap paper, but scrap paper of any kind should work. We're using these flowers as stencils to create the background. Place the die cut flowers on the Very Vanilla cardstock piece that will be your top layer. I temporarily adhered them using temporary adhesive. A tiny bit of snail adhesive on the back would probably work, too. 

Using a sponge or brush or some kind of ink blending tool, rub Pool Party ink over the top third (or so, it doesn't have to be precise) of the background. I used the Stampin Sponges, which give the ink a textured look. Using the Life Changing Blender Brushes (available on Amazon) or other makeup brushes like that will give more of a smooth look to the ink on the paper. Add Coastal Cabana ink in the middle and Bermuda Bay ink on the bottom portion of the layer.

Pull off the die cut flowers to reveal the pattern on the layer. So pretty! I love this technique!

Stamp sentiment on scrap of Very Vanilla cardstock in Bermuda Bay ink. Stamp the outline flower on top of the sentiment to the left side in Grapefruit Grove ink. Die cut the sentiment using the frame from the Wild Rose dies.

Adhere the Very Vanilla layer on top of the Coastal Cabana layer. Wrap the Grapefruit Grove ribbon around the two layers twice and tie a bow. Position this just below center on this layer. Adhere to the card base.

Adhere the sentiment using Dimensionals on the front of the card. Adhere sequins from Woven Threads sequin assortment to front of card using Fine Tip Glue Pen. I used three sequins but you can use as many as you want.

Stamp the shading stamp in Coastal Cabana on the bottom right corner of the Very Vanilla layer for inside of card. Stamp the outline stamp in Bermuda Bay on top, lining up the images. Adhere inside layer to inside of card.

Isn't that a fun card?! I love those colors together - they feel very summer-y and light to me.

Using Your Dies to Emboss, Butterflies, and a Dinosaur Kids Card!

Today I'm making three beautiful cards, including a card that uses a die to emboss your cardstock and a kids card with a really cute dinosaur.

First up is a card that expands the usefulness of your dies by using them to emboss. Here's the card:

To make this card, I started with a Flirty Flamingo card base (8 1/2 x 5 1/2") and attached a layer of Lovely Lipstick cardstock that is 5 1/4 x 4".

For the top layer, I used Whisper White cardstock cut to 5 x 3 3/4". I embossed this layer using the Springtime Impressions dies. To emboss your paper using a die, put a flexible layer like your silicone craft sheet between your paper and your cutting plate with the die on top of your paper, cutting side down. Every die cut machine is different, so you'll need to test yours to determine the right sandwich to use.

Stamp the flower from the Pop of Petals stamp set on watercolor paper in Lovely Lipstick, Flirty Flamingo, and Petal Pink ink. Make sure to mark your stamp so you know the orientation to stamp so your punch will cut it out (watch the video below to see me explain it). While the ink is still wet, use your aqua painter to blend the ink a bit. Punch the flowers out using the Four Petal Flower punch.

Stamp the leaf from the stamp set three times in Granny Apple Green ink on a piece of Whisper White cardstock and fussy cut them out.

Stamp the sentiment from the A Big Thank You stamp set using Sahara Sand ink on a scrap of Whisper White cardstock. Punch it out using the 1 1/2" Circle Punch. Punch a scallop circle from a scrap of Lovely Lipstick cardstock using the 1 3/8" scallop circle punch. Cut the scallop circle in half and adhere the halves behind the sentiment, peaking out of the top and bottom.

Cut a stitched circle from Sahara Sand cardstock using the Stitched Shapes dies. Adhere the Sahara Sand circle to the embossed Whisper White layer toward the left side and top of the embossed layer (offset). Adhere the punched out flowers around the right side of the stitched circle, using a dimensional to pop up at least one of the flowers. Tuck the green leaves in behind the flowers. Adhere the sentiment to the left of the circle.

The second card features a stamp set that I adore - Beauty Abounds. There are many great stamps in this set. Today, I'm using the two stamps with overlapping circles and the dotted background stamp in the set. I'm also using two of the sentiments.

Here's the card:

This card is super easy to make and is just stunning.

Start with a card base of Blueberry Bushel, cut to 8 1/2 x 5 1/2".

The top layer is Whisper White, cut to 5 1/4 x 4" Stamp the larger circles in Mango Melody ink, Grapefruit Grove ink, Coastal Cabana ink, and Blueberry Bushel ink. Use the colors in whatever proportions you prefer. Stamp the smaller circles, filling in the gaps, using the same ink colors. I usually start with the lightest color first.

After all of the colors are stamped on the Whisper White layer, emboss the entire piece using the Subtle 3D embossing folder. I just love this embossing folder - it gives the paper the look of linen, and just adds a beautiful slight bit of texture to the card.

Cut the two layers of butterflies using the Butterfly Beauty dies that coordinate with the stamp set. These dies are large and include several butterflies. You can cut them apart once they are cut. I used only the butterflies in the upper left part of the die. Cut one small butterfly using one of the small dies.

Stamp the sentiment using Tuxedo Black Memento ink on a scrap of Coastal Cabana cardstock and punch it out using the Everyday label punch. I think it would look beautiful to also punch the Everyday Label out of Blueberry Bushel cardstock, cut it in half and layer it behind the sentiment to make the sentiment pop even more.

Adhere some Silver Metallic Thread behind the sentiment and adhere the sentiment to the stamped background layer. Adhere the butterflies. Add some shimmer to the butterflies using your Wink of Stella pen. Then I sprayed the whole card using some Champagne Mist Shimmer Paint in some 70% rubbing alcohol to give it a good sparkle. Lovely!

For the inside layer, I stamped a piece of Whisper White, cut to 5 1/4 x 4" with the dotted background stamp in Grapefruit Grove ink. I stamped the other part of the sentiment on top of that in Tuxedo Black Memento Ink and stamped some of the circles in the lower corner.

So beautiful! I love the colorful circles on the background! They make me so happy!

For the last card, I wanted to play with the DinoRoar Suite and make a kids card. I had to get this suite because it reminds me of when my son was little. He loved dinosaurs so much. We had so many little dinosaurs around the house.

This is a super easy card to make:

I just love the colors in this DSP! They make the dinosaurs so bright and fun. And the sentiments in this stamp set are so darn adorable! You're RAWRsome - how fun is that?

Start with a card base of Old Olive cardstock, cut to 8 1/2 x 5 1/2".

Emboss a piece of Pool Party cardstock using the Mosaic 3D embossing folder. It should be at least 3 inches wide and about 1 1/2" tall - I think there's about 3/4" to an inch peeking out from under the DSP.

The DSP is 3 x 4 1/2".

Stamp the tyrranosaurus in Mango Melody ink and his spikes in Lovely Lipstick ink on a scrap piece of Whisper White cardstock. Cut out using the Dino Days dies. So cute! Adhere the spikes to the dinosaur's back.

Cut stitched oval from Old Olive cardstock using Stitched Shapes dies. Adhere to DSP, toward top of card.

Stamp the sentiment on a scrap piece of Whisper White cardstock that is 3/4" side. Banner cut one end using either scissors or the Banner Triple Punch. Cut a piece of the 3/8" Denim Ribbon (about 2"), diagonal cut one end and adhere to DSP layer below the oval layer.

Adhere dinosaur and sentiment using dimensionals. 

I can't even believe how cute this card is! And so easy to make using the DinoRoar Suite - everything coordinates!

How to Make a Simple Card and Step it Up Two Ways Using Bloom and Grow Stamp Set

Today's post is about how to make a simple card, using just stamps, ink and paper, and then step it up a couple of ways.

The first card we're making today is a #simplestamping card. That means that all you need to make this card are stamps, ink and paper. Isn't that great! If you want to "jazz it up," I'll show you a couple of ways to do that, as well.

Here's the card:

For this card, I used a Whisper White card base and a layer of Whisper White card stock on top. I stamped the images from the Bloom & Grow stamp set on the Whisper White layer in Poppy Parade ink. I stamped the sentiment on a strip of Whisper White card stock in Night of Navy ink and banner cut the ends. I adhered the Whisper White layer to the card base using adhesive (any adhesive will work - snail, liquid glue, even dimensionals). I adhered the sentiment strip to the Whisper White layer using Stampin Dimensionals.

That's it! We're done with the first card.  Easy peasy, right?

Supplies for the first card:

• Bloom & Grow stamp set
• Whisper White card stock for card base (5 1/2 x 8 1/2", folded in half) and layer (5 1/4 x 4") and sentiment (1" strip)
• Poppy Parade ink
• Night of Navy ink
• liquid glue

On to the second card. I stepped this card up just a little bit by using a colored card stock card base and coloring the floral images and cutting them out using the dies that match the stamp set. I also added some Clear Faceted Gems and some rhinestones.

Stamp floral image on scrap of Whisper White card stock in Tuxedo Black Memento Ink. Color with Stampin Write Markers. Cut out using Budding Blooms dies. Adhere to card using Stampin Dimensionals. Add Clear Faceted Gems to center of largest flowers and rhinestones to Whisper White layer.

Voila! You're done. That wasn't too bad, either, was it?

Now on to the third card. I stepped this card up even more by using DSP and adding a couple of additional colors of markers for shading on the flowers. I also die cut the smallest flowers using the Budding Blooms dies in addition to cutting out the stamped images. The sentiment is heat embossed on Night of Navy card stock using White Stampin Emboss Powder.

• Garden Lane DSP - 5 1/4 x 4"

• Versamark ink

Stamp sentiment in Versamark ink on strip of Night of Navy card stock. Add White Stampin Emboss Powder on the ink, tap off excess. Heat until embossing powder melts. Banner cut ends of sentiment using Banner Triple Punch.

Stamp floral images on scrap of Whisper White card stock using Tuxedo Black Memento ink. Color images using Stampin Write Markers. Die cut images using Budding Blooms dies.

Cut scalloped slit in center of DSP using scalloped die from Budding Blooms dies. Slits should be above and below where sentiment strip will sit. The slits will not go all the way across the card. Your die cut flower images will be inserted in the slits. Adhere die cut flower images onto DSP using Multipurpose Liquid Glue. Adhere sentiment in center of DSP using Stampin Dimensionals.

Adhere DSP to card base. Adhere two small flowers together, offset, to make small flowers. Adhere to sentiment strip using Glue Dots. Add rhinestone to center of each small flower. Adhere Clear Faceted Gem to center of largest flowers.

And that's the third card. I just love it - it's so beautiful!
